1. It'll hack off the Pope who declared recently that choosing to have a pet rather than children was selfish. Not that it's anything new. Back in 2014, he said that having pets instead of children was: "another phenomenon of cultural degradation". This from a man who is voluntarily celibate and who wears a dress for a living. Brilliant.
2. It'll seriously annoy the Iranian Parliament which is, according to the Western press, considering passing legislation that would ban most household pets in order to - wait for it - protect the country from the influence of 'unclean' and 'un-Islamic' animals. The proposed law described people living with animals as a "destructive social problem."
3. Snuggling with Fido (other names are available) will help me keep warm and save on my energy costs. At least according to the dingbats at Ovo Energy, who own SSE, who send me a gas and electricity bill every quarter. The not-so-sage advice was part of SSE's blog offering tips on: "keeping warm in winter without turning up the heating”. As pet insurance and vet's fees are likely to be considerably cheaper than my next tariff, this might be the way to go...
So, all in all adopting a pooch would be a win-win situation...providing it's big and suitably furry....
